FAQ — WetCoast Pet Care

Question 1

What is an in-home parrot care visit?

Accepted Answer

Instead of your bird travelling to us, we come to your home to care for them in their own environment. Visits include feeding, fresh water, cage spot-cleaning, out-of-cage time, and social interaction — everything your parrot needs to stay happy and unstressed while you're away.

Question 2

Which areas in Victoria do you cover for in-home visits?

Accepted Answer

We cover Greater Victoria including Saanich, Oak Bay, Esquimalt, Colwood, Langford, View Royal, Sidney, Brentwood Bay, and Bear Mountain. Not sure if you're in range? Get in touch and we'll let you know.

Question 3

How long is each visit?

Accepted Answer

Standard visits are approximately 30–45 minutes. That's enough time to feed, refresh water, spot-clean the cage, and spend quality time with your bird. Longer visits can be arranged for parrots that need more out-of-cage time or enrichment.

Question 4

How many visits per day does my parrot need?

Accepted Answer

For most parrots, one to two visits per day is sufficient for short trips. Highly social species — like African Greys, Amazons, or large macaws — often do better with two visits to break up the day. We'll recommend a schedule based on your bird's personality and routine.

Question 5

Is my home safe with a stranger coming in?

Accepted Answer

We understand the trust involved in letting someone into your home. We're happy to provide references, and we always do a meet-and-greet at your home before any booking is confirmed. We treat your space with care and respect — and we're there for your bird, not to poke around.

Question 6

Do I need to do anything to prepare my home before visits?

Accepted Answer

Just leave clear instructions for your bird's routine — feeding amounts, favourite perches, any quirks we should know about. We'll also ask about emergency contacts and your vet's details at the meet-and-greet. Beyond that, no special preparation is needed.

Question 7

Will you give me updates during in-home visits?

Accepted Answer

Yes — we send a message after each visit with a photo or short video so you can see your bird is doing well. If anything seems off — appetite, droppings, behaviour — we'll flag it to you right away.

Question 8

Can you also water my plants or handle mail while you're there?

Accepted Answer

We can take care of simple tasks like watering plants or bringing in mail as part of a visit — just let us know at the meet-and-greet. Our focus is always your bird first, but we're happy to help with small extras that give you peace of mind.

Question 9

What if my parrot doesn't warm up to you right away?

Accepted Answer

That's completely normal — parrots can be cautious with new people. The meet-and-greet helps your bird get familiar with us before you leave. During visits, we take a patient, low-pressure approach and let your bird set the pace for interaction.

Question 10

How do I book in-home visits?

Accepted Answer

Start by booking a meet-and-greet through our booking page. We'll come to your home, meet your bird, go over their routine, and confirm the visit schedule. From there, everything is arranged before your trip so there are no surprises.

Question 11

How often does my parrot need a beak or nail trim?

Accepted Answer

It varies by species, diet, and the surfaces your bird spends time on. Most parrots benefit from a nail trim every 6–12 weeks. Beak trims are less frequent and usually only needed if the beak is overgrown or misshapen — a healthy beak on a bird with appropriate chewing opportunities often maintains itself.

Question 12

Do you use chemical restraints or anaesthesia for grooming?

Accepted Answer

No. We use calm handling and gentle towel restraint only. If a bird is extremely stressed or aggressive, we'll discuss options with you rather than force the procedure.

Question 13

Should I clip my parrot's wings?

Accepted Answer

That's a personal decision and we respect whatever you choose. Wing clipping can improve safety indoors and make handling easier, but it's not right for every bird or every situation. We're happy to talk through the pros and cons for your specific bird.

Question 14

How long does a grooming session take?

Accepted Answer

Most grooming sessions take 15–30 minutes depending on the bird's temperament and what's being done. We never rush — if a bird needs a break, we take one.

Question 15

My parrot is nervous about being handled. Can you still groom them?

Accepted Answer

Yes, and we're experienced with anxious or hand-shy birds. We take a slow, low-stress approach and will never force a procedure if a bird is clearly distressed. In some cases we may recommend splitting the session across two visits.

Question 16

Can I stay with my bird during the grooming session?

Accepted Answer

In most cases, yes. Some birds actually settle better without their owner present — they can pick up on your anxiety — but we'll discuss what works best for your bird specifically.

Question 17

Where are you located?

Accepted Answer

We're based in Victoria, BC and serve the Greater Victoria area — including Saanich, Oak Bay, Esquimalt, Colwood, Langford, View Royal, Sidney, Brentwood Bay, and Bear Mountain. Exact address is provided when you book — we ask that you don't share it publicly.

Question 18

Do you offer pick-up and drop-off?

Accepted Answer

We don't currently offer transport, but we're centrally located in Victoria and easy to reach. If transport is a barrier, get in touch and we'll see what we can work out.

Question 19

Do I need to do a meet-and-greet first?

Accepted Answer

We strongly recommend it for first-time boarding clients. It gives your bird a chance to meet us in a low-pressure setting, and it gives us a chance to learn about their personality, routine, and any quirks we should know about.

Question 20

What are your drop-off and pick-up hours?

Accepted Answer

We work by appointment rather than set hours, so drop-off and pick-up times are arranged when you book. This means your arrival gets our full attention rather than being squeezed into a busy lobby.

Question 21

How far in advance should I book?

Accepted Answer

We recommend booking at least a week ahead for grooming and two or more weeks for boarding, especially around holidays and long weekends when demand is highest. Last-minute requests are sometimes possible — just ask.

Question 22

Why would I need DNA testing for my parrot?

Accepted Answer

DNA testing is the only reliable way to determine the sex of most parrot species, since males and females look identical. It's useful for breeding decisions, naming your bird, and understanding certain health or behavioural tendencies linked to sex.

Question 23

How is the DNA sample collected?

Accepted Answer

We collect a small blood sample or a few feather follicles — both are quick and minimally invasive. The sample is sent to a certified avian laboratory and results typically come back within 1–2 weeks.

Question 24

Is DNA testing stressful for my bird?

Accepted Answer

The collection process is brief and most birds tolerate it well. We use calm handling techniques and keep the experience as low-stress as possible.

Question 25

Do you offer transport to vet appointments?

Accepted Answer

Yes. We can transport your parrot safely to and from avian vet appointments in the Greater Victoria area. We use appropriate carriers and take every precaution to keep your bird calm and secure during the journey.

Question 26

Can you transport a bird that is nervous in the car?

Accepted Answer

We have experience with anxious travellers. We use covered carriers, keep the environment quiet, and drive smoothly. For birds with severe travel anxiety, we can discuss strategies with you beforehand.
